How does Laser hair removal work?

Our process begins with a consultation and patch test, where our team of experts will determine the best treatment plan for you. The number of treatments needed will depend on the area being treated, skin type and hair density. Most people will need at least 6 - 8 sessions to achieve the desired results. Laser hair removal can reduce the amount of hair growth (80% +), but the hair follicles may still produce some hair, which is often light and fluffy. Following up on your treatments with maintenance sessions is important to achieve optimum results.

Specific wavelengths of laser light are selectively absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment which surrounds the hair follicle and disables the follicle at the root, causing the hair to fall out permanently. There are three stages of hair growth and at any one time only 30% of the hairs are visible on the skin surface the rest are in a dormant state, this is why you will need multiple sessions.

As with all laser technology, red, white and grey hairs will not respond to the laser treatment, as they contain no melanin.

As follicular acne begins in the follicle, laser hair removal can be beneficial in improving the condition.

How many sessions will I need?

We recommend that most people will need an average of 6-8 sessions, but some may need more for the best, longest-lasting results. Laser sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart for facial areas and 6 weeks apart for body. Yearly top ups may also be required to keep any stray hairs at bay.

Useful Information

People often describe the sensation of the laser as a hot band, repeatedly pinging on the skin. The sensation varies from person to person.

We would recommend that it is best to wait 3 months post-pregnancy and breastfeeding before having any treatments.

We can treat tanned skin as long as the tan isn’t active in the skin, therefore we recommend no sun exposure a minimum of 14 days before and 14 days after your treatments. We always recommend wearing a high factor suncream SPF50 during your laser treatment programme as your skin may be more sensitive and react more to heat and sunlight.

Please refrain from applying any false tan for at least 7 days before your treatment. Please ensure any tan residue is completely removed from your skin before treatment. Fake tan can be applied 48 hours after treatments.

At your consultation, we will always ask if you are taking any medication. If so, we would always advise that you check with your GP first, if you are safe for the treatment. Some medications can cause light-sensitive reactions, for which this treatment would be unsuitable. We advise that you check if any medication or supplements are photo-sensitive.
