What Is Lumecca Peak IPL?
IPL uses broad-spectrum light that is absorbed by pigment in the skin and by the haemoglobin in small, visible blood vessels.
The light energy heats these targets. Pigmented spots gradually darken and flake away, and visible redness and broken capillaries can fade over the following weeks.
Lumecca is designed to deliver more light energy in a shorter pulse than many standard IPL systems, which can mean fewer sessions are needed to see an improvement.
At Update Aesthetics, Lumecca is always recommended following a consultation, so you can be confident it is suitable for your skin.
What Can Lumecca Peak IPL Treat?
Lumecca can be considered for several common skin concerns, many of which are linked to sun exposure over time. This may include:
sun damage and uneven skin tone
broken capilalries and thread veins
sunspots on the hands and arms
sun spots and age spots
general facial redness
dull or tired looking skin
freckles and uneven pigmentation
the appearance of redness associated with rosacea
pigmentation on the neck and chest
If your main concern is skin texture, firmness or acne scarring, Morpheus8 may be more appropriate.
Some types of pigmentation, such as melasma, need a different approach. Your consultation will help identify the most suitable treatment.
Is Lumecca IPL Right For Me?
Because IPL works by targeting pigment, your skin tone and recent sun exposure play an important part in deciding whether treatment is suitable.
Lumecca cannot be carried out on tanned skin, including fake tan, so treatment is often planned for the autumn and winter months, or at times when you can protect your skin from the sun.
A patch test is usually carried out before your first full treatment to check how your skin responds
Where another treatment would suit your skin or concern better, this will be discussed during your consultation.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Many patients are recommended between 1 and 3 Lumecca sessions, spaced around 4 weeks apart.
Improvement is often noticeable after the first session as treated pigment flakes away, with further improvement across the course.
Results can be long-lasting with good sun protection, but new pigmentation and redness can develop over time. Maintenance sessions can be discussed if you would like to keep your skin looking clear.
Lumecca Recovery and Aftercare
Many patients return to their normal routine straight after Lumecca, although the skin may look red and feel warm for a few hours. Treated pigmentation usually darkens over the first day or two, then flakes away naturally over around 7 to 10 days. Following treatment, you will be given personalised aftercare instructions for your skin.
If you have an important event approaching, we recommend allowing at least 2 weeks after treatment for darkened spots to flake away.
General guidance includes:
avoid sun exposure, sunbeds and fake tan for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment
let darkened spots flake away naturally and avoid picking or scrubbing
pause active skincare such as retinol and exfoliating acids until advised
apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day throughout your course
avoid hot baths, saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
follow any additional instructions provided by your practitioner
Morpheus8, Lumecca and Forma can each be used on their own, or as part of a wider skin plan when you have more than one concern.

What happens During a Lumecca Appointment?
Treatment typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, although this can vary depending on the size and number of areas treated.
Your appointment begins with a consultation to discuss your concerns, medical history and the result you would like to achieve.
01
Your skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied to help keep you comfortable during treatment.
02
The Lumecca handpiece is placed on the skin and delivers pulses of light across the area. Most patients describe a warm, snapping sensation.
03
The gel is removed, your skin is soothed and SPF is applied before you are given personalised aftercare advice.

ADVICE FROM OUR CLINICAL DIRECTOR
Why Choose Update Aesthetics for Lumecca Peak IPL?
"IPL works best when it is planned around your skin tone, your sun exposure and the cause of your pigmentation or redness. Here is how we make sure it is safe and suitable for you."

Every treatment starts with a consultation
Not every brown mark or red patch should be treated with IPL. I want to understand what is causing your concern before we recommend anything, and if Lumecca is not right for you, we will tell you.
01
Safety comes first
We check your skin type, recent sun exposure and medication, and carry out a patch test where needed before your first full treatment.
02
A clearer, more even-looking complexion
My aim is skin that looks clearer and more even in tone, while still looking natural and healthy.
03
A nurse-led clinic in the heart of Truro
Living in Cornwall means plenty of time outdoors. We understand the effect the sun has on our patients' skin, and we plan treatment around the seasons at our Lemon Street clinic.
04
The right treatment, not just one treatment
Because we also offer Morpheus8 and Forma, I can recommend the treatment, or combination, that suits your concern rather than fitting you to a single machine.
