At Update Aesthetics, our nurse-led team treats patients at our clinics in Truro and on Harley Street, using Juvederm and Maili fillers to create results that suit your face rather than a one-size-fits-all look.
Treatment time
30 minutes including consultation.
Recovery time
No real downtime, but some swelling and bruising is common for a few days. Your lips may look fuller than the final result while the swelling settles.
Pre and post treatment care
No alcohol for 24 hours before or after treatment. Avoid exercise for 24 hours after treatment. Avoid touching or rubbing your lips the day after treatment to reduce the risk of infection.
What Is Lip Augmentation?
Lip augmentation, often called lip filler, is an injectable treatment using hyaluronic acid gel.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin and attracts and holds water. Placed in the lips, it adds volume and support and can refine the shape and outline.
At Update Aesthetics, we use Juvederm and Maili, two established hyaluronic acid filler ranges with products made for the lips.

Before recommending how much filler to use and where, we look at your lips in proportion to the rest of your face, including your chin, your nose and the balance between your upper and lower lip.

If you are new to filler, we usually recommend starting with a small amount and building gradually.
Steps for Your Lip Filler Appointment

Preparation: Your lips are cleansed and numbing cream can be applied. Many lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic to make treatment more comfortable.

Treatment: The filler is injected in small amounts with a fine needle or cannula, and we check shape and symmetry as we go.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
Lip filler usually lasts around 6 to 12 months.
Lips break filler down faster than areas such as the cheeks or chin because they move constantly when you talk and eat.
Many patients book a maintenance appointment when they notice volume starting to fade.

how much your lips move when you talk and eat
your metabolism
lifestyle factors
the product used
General guidance includes:
avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatment
avoid exercise, saunas and hot environments for 24 hours after treatment
avoid touching, rubbing or kissing for the rest of the day
avoid lipstick and lip products for 24 hours
Swelling is normal and usually peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours, then settles over a few days.
Your lips can take around two weeks to settle into their final shape.
Contact the clinic straight away if you notice severe pain, changes in skin colour or swelling that keeps getting worse.

Numbing cream is applied before treatment, and many lip fillers contain a local anaesthetic that takes effect as the product is injected. At Update Aesthetics, we work slowly and check in with you throughout so you can take a break if you need one.

Lip filler usually takes around two weeks to settle. Swelling is most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours and can make lips look uneven or fuller than the final result. We recommend waiting two weeks before judging your lips, and the Update Aesthetics team can review them if anything concerns you.

Yes, natural-looking results are the aim of every lip treatment at Update Aesthetics. The overdone look usually comes from too much filler or treatment that ignores the shape of the rest of the face. We plan treatment around your facial proportions and often start with a conservative amount.

Yes, hyaluronic acid lip filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It can be used to correct filler that has moved or to soften a result you are unhappy with. If you have had lip filler elsewhere, the Update Aesthetics team can assess it at a consultation.

No, Update Aesthetics does not carry out lip filler during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There is not enough safety data on dermal fillers at these times. We are happy to see you for a consultation once you have finished breastfeeding.
